Perking Up During a Pandemic Holiday

The holidays are coming and usually most people feel the warm-fuzzies of being with family, music, decorations and yummy food.

This year is certainly going to be a different story around the world, with the pandemic raging worse than ever. Depression and loneliness have skyrocketed, understandably. Many are going to be spending the holidays alone. You might feel like you’re on your own lonely little island. In this, you are not alone.

Although the current world condition is not optimal, there ARE ways to feel better – Even happy, during this holiday season.

Actually, it is very important to shift your energy, so you are putting out constructive energy into the world.

First, it’s important to remember that we are all in this together. We’re a world team! We can defeat our opponent (COVID) and live our lives normally once more. It just might take a little while. Remember, that this too shall pass.

Technology certainly can be our friend (I can’t believe I’m saying this!) We can start by being grateful for the fact we can have a “virtual” Thanksgiving with family and friends via Zoom, or whatever platform you like best. Create a fantastic meal for yourself and everyone can sit, eat, drink and talk as if you are together.

If you are technologically-challenged, there is always the good ‘ole telephone. Maybe if you are a techno-whiz, you can give by sharing your knowledge and help others who are not so savvy get online with their loved ones. Helping others always does so much to lift your spirit.

If you are going to be alone, treat yourself to your favorite TV shows, while eating a delicious meal. Maybe take a long luxurious bath or lounge in your pajamas all day. Just spoil yourself for the day.

Another thing you can do to stop the painful loneliness is get a pet. Yes, it’s responsibility. Yes, it’s time-consuming. But yes, IT’S LOVE! for the day.The unconditional affection and companionship of an animal is like no other. Plus, if you rescue one, you are giving a wonderful home to a being aching for the same love you are looking for.

Get out in nature. If you have that new doggie, take it out and go get some fresh air, for God’s sake! Nature is nurture – Even if you don’t have a pet. Appreciating the flowers, greenery and miracle of Mother Earth is an immediate spirit-lifter.

I know I’m a broken record, but Meditate. Every day. Meditation increases feel-good neurochemicals like serotonin and dopamine, as it reduces stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. Plus, it brings you closer to Spirit and is good for your body, as well as your mind

Double-down on self-care – Especially exercise. Your physical experience always influences your emotional experience. You’ll feel better about yourself, as well as doing a favor for your body. The ultimate win-win.

Now that you are home more, it’s time to declutter. You’ve waited long enough. Decluttering your space helps you feel a sense of inner calm, peace and pride in your accomplishment. Trust me, you don’t need that hot dog cooker from 1974.

It’s official: I am a broken record: Every day, write down what you are grateful for. Even if it is being grateful for the hands you have to write down what you’re grateful for. Surely there is something.

Give yourself a vacation day from self-criticism and practice self-love. You’ve earned it. Every time you say hurtful things to you about you, turn it around and tell yourself something positive that describes you, such as being caring, thoughtful, creative, adventurous, trustworthy. If self-judgment comes in, give yourself a little hug and say, “Don’t be so hard on yourself.”

It is so vital to intentionally counteract the energy in this current climate with a conscientious investment in creating happiness.

Be a Pioneer and show everyone that there is a way to feel good, even contented, during this holiday season.
